MEANING OF MAZAGRAN
The result of in-depth research on the methods of preparing coffee, Mazagran is an implement for cold brew coffee, a method which, by not using hot water, avoids the oxidation of the coffee allowing a drink with a more intense and full-bodied taste. Mazagran means a cold, sweetened coffee drink (usually served in a glass) that originated in Algeria. Portuguese versions use espresso, lemon. mint and/or rum. Austrian versions are served with an ice cube and include rum.
HISTORY
French Foreign Legion soldiers during the seige of Mazagran from 1837 to 1840, drank cold water (to counter the Algerian heat) & sometimes syrup in their coffee. It was so enjoyable, when they returned to Paris, they asked the cafe owners to serve this drink. The Parisienne cafes agreed and served this drink in tall glasses, which became known as cafe mazagran. Today, in France, cold brewed coffee served in glasses is referred to as "mazagrin".
